Winter Afro Hair Care Guide
Cold air outside and central heating indoors both dry afro and curly hair out, and hats and scarves add friction. In winter the aim is to put moisture in, seal it and protect the hair from breakage.
Your winter routine in four steps
1. Cleanse gently
Use a moisturising or sulfate-free shampoo, and wash a little less often than in summer.
2. Deep condition
Use a deep conditioner or hair mask after every wash, then a leave-in conditioner.
Shop winter conditioners and masks
3. Seal in moisture
Lock the moisture in with a hair butter or oil. A hot oil treatment before washing helps very dry hair.
Shop winter hair oils and butters
4. Protect
Wear protective styles, sleep in a satin bonnet, and put satin between your hair and wool hats or scarves.
By hair type
- 4A: a leave-in plus a light oil is often enough.
- 4B: use a cream and a butter, and detangle gently on damp hair.
- 4C: choose the richest products, work in small sections and re-moisturise during the week.
- Low porosity: use lighter products on warm, damp hair.
- High porosity: seal with a thicker butter or oil.
