How to choose a relaxer

• No-lye kits: boxed kits for home use. You mix an activator into the creme before applying.
• Lye relaxers: sodium hydroxide creme relaxers in tubs, mostly used by professionals.
• Strength: Mild or Fine for fine and colour-treated hair, Regular or Normal for medium hair, and Super or Extra Strength for coarse, resistant hair.
• Texturisers: loosen the curl without making it fully straight. See texturisers.

Before you relax

Always do the strand test and follow the instructions in the box exactly. Do not relax if your scalp is sore, scratched or irritated. A trained stylist is the safest choice.

Common questions

What is the difference between lye and no-lye relaxer? Lye relaxers use sodium hydroxide. No-lye relaxers use a different active ingredient that is mixed just before use. Both straighten the hair, and both need careful timing.

Which strength should I buy? Match it to your hair. Fine or coloured hair needs Mild. Thick, coarse hair may need Super. If you are unsure, choose the gentler one.

How often should I retouch? Follow the timing in the product instructions, and apply only to the new growth. Overlapping onto relaxed hair can cause breakage.

What do I need afterwards? A neutralising shampoo, which usually comes in the kit, then a good conditioner. See conditioners and treatments.
