What do you need?

  • Tint brush: a small brush for roots and hairlines, a jumbo brush for covering lengths quickly.
  • Mixing bowl: plastic bowls with a handle and pouring lip. Always use plastic or glass, never metal.
  • Bowl and brush sets: both in one, often with a hook for sectioning.
  • Tipping or highlighting cap: a perforated cap for pulling strands through to highlight evenly.
  • Gloves: boxes of 100 nitrile or vinyl gloves in medium and large.

Common questions

Why not mix dye in a metal bowl? Metal can react with the developer and affect the colour result.

Nitrile or vinyl gloves? Nitrile is stronger and fits closer. Vinyl is cheaper and fine for quick jobs. Both are latex free.

How do I avoid staining my skin? Put a thin line of petroleum jelly around the hairline and ears before you start.
