Summer Afro Hair Care Guide
Heat, humidity, sun and swimming all change what afro and curly hair needs. In summer the aim is to keep hair clean, lightly moisturised and protected, without weighing it down.
Your summer routine in four steps
1. Cleanse more often
Sweat and product build up faster in the heat. Use a clarifying shampoo every few washes, and a co-wash in between.

2. Condition lightly
Swap heavy creams for leave-in sprays, hair milks and curl refreshers. Still deep condition after swimming.
Shop summer leave-ins and light conditioners
3. Control frizz
Humid air causes frizz and shrinkage. An anti-frizz or anti-humidity product helps a style last.

4. Protect from sun and heat
Cover your hair in strong sun, and use heat protection before blow drying or straightening.
By hair type
- 3C and 4A: light leave-ins and gels usually give definition without weight.
- 4B and 4C: keep a cream in your routine for moisture, but use less butter and oil than in winter.
- Low porosity: stick to light, water-based products.
- High porosity: seal with a light oil so moisture does not escape as quickly.
