Edge control comes in three main forms: gel, wax or pomade, and stick. They all lay and hold your hairline, but they feel different and suit different hair and styles.
At a glance
| Type | Feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Gel | Light, smooth, usually shiny | Everyday styles, fine or relaxed edges |
| Wax or pomade | Thicker, firmer | Thick or coily edges, sleek ponytails and buns |
| Stick | Solid, goes on thinly | Flyaways, partings, quick touch-ups, your handbag |
Edge control gel
Gel is the lightest option and the easiest to spread. It suits fine, relaxed or looser textured edges and softer everyday looks. Popular gels we stock include Cantu Extra Hold Edge Stay Gel, ORS Olive Oil Edge Control, Mielle Rosemary Mint Edge Gel and Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil Edge Hair Gel.
Edge control wax and pomade
Wax and pomade are thicker. Many people with thick or tightly coiled hair find they hold better than gel, especially for slick-back styles. Options include Red by Kiss Edge Fixer 24 Hour Max Hold Wax, Edge Booster Pro Hair Styling Wax and Murray's Edgewax Extreme Hold.
Wax sticks
A stick is rubbed straight on to the hair, so there is no pot and no mess on your fingers. It is handy for smoothing flyaways along a parting or the top of a ponytail, and for touch-ups when you are out. We stock the Ebin New York 24 Hour Hair Sleek Stick, among others.
Can you use more than one?
Yes. A common routine is a stick for flyaways on the lengths and a gel or wax for the baby hairs. Test the two together on the back of your hand first to check they do not turn white.
Still not sure?
Start with a small pot of gel if your edges are fine, or a wax if they are thick and coily. You can also ask in any of our Leeds shops in Chapeltown, Roundhay Road and the City Centre. See the full edge control collection.
