Three tips for school mornings

Wash on Sunday

Wash, condition and detangle at the weekend so weekday mornings only need a quick refresh.

Pick a style that lasts

Braids, twists and cornrows can stay neat for the school week. Keep them loose at the hairline.

Moisturise after the bath

Put lotion on while the skin is still slightly damp, and keep a small pot of jelly for dry lips and knees.

Questions

How do I know my child's curl type?

Look at the hair when it is clean and damp with no product in. Loose S-shaped waves are type 2, springy curls and ringlets are type 3, and tight coils or zig-zags are type 4. Many children have more than one type.

How often should I wash my child's hair?

It depends on the hair and how active they are. Many families with curly or afro hair wash every one to two weeks and refresh with water and a leave-in between washes.

What helps with tangles?

Detangle on damp hair with conditioner or a detangling spray. Use a wide-tooth comb and start at the ends, working up to the roots.

How long can braids stay in for school?

Follow your braider's advice. Keep the scalp clean, do not braid tightly at the hairline, and take them out if the scalp is sore.
