How to look after braids

Good care keeps braids neat and your scalp comfortable.

  • Keep your scalp clean. Wash gently with diluted shampoo, working it along the partings, then rinse well.
  • Dry fully. Damp braids can smell and irritate the scalp, so let them dry completely.
  • Moisturise lightly. A light oil or braid spray on the scalp and lengths is enough. Heavy products build up.
  • Cover at night. A satin bonnet or scarf cuts down frizz.
  • Do not leave them in too long. Many stylists suggest no more than six to eight weeks. Take them out sooner if your scalp is sore.
