Sulphate-free shampoos clean with milder cleansers, so they remove dirt without stripping natural oils. That makes them a good fit for afro, curly, coloured and chemically treated hair, which dries out easily. How to choose

• Moisturising: for dry, natural hair. Look for argan, shea or avocado.
• Cream shampoo: low lather and very gentle.
• Growth and strengthening: formulas with castor oil, biotin or rosemary.
• For locs: residue-free washes that rinse clean.

Common questions

Why does it not lather much? Sulphates are what make big foam. Less lather does not mean less clean. Use more water and massage the scalp well.

Do I still need to clarify? Yes, every few weeks if you use gels, butters or oils, as gentle shampoos can leave build-up behind.

Is it better for coloured hair? Generally yes. Colour tends to last longer.
