Protein shampoos are made for weak, over-processed or breaking hair. Proteins such as keratin, egg and quinoa coat the hair and fill gaps in the surface, so it feels stronger and snaps less. Do you need protein?

• Signs you might: hair that feels limp, mushy or over-stretchy when wet, or that has been bleached, coloured or relaxed.
• Signs you might not: hair that feels stiff, dry and straw-like may need moisture instead.
• How often: for most people, every few washes is enough. Alternate with a moisturising shampoo.

Common questions

Can you use too much protein? Yes. Too much can leave hair hard and brittle. If that happens, switch to moisture-rich products for a while.

Should I follow with conditioner? Always. A moisturising conditioner balances the protein.

Is it safe for coloured hair? Generally yes, and coloured hair often benefits.
