Jojoba Oil for Hair: What It Does and How to Use It

Why people ask about jojoba oil

Jojoba is one of the most searched oils on our site. Over a recent 90-day period, searches for jojoba oil brought our pure jojoba product page nearly 3,000 impressions. That tells us a lot of people are weighing it up before they buy. This guide is here to help you decide whether jojoba suits your hair, or whether another oil would serve you better.

What jojoba oil actually is

Jojoba comes from the seed of the jojoba shrub. Chemically it behaves more like a liquid wax than a traditional oil. Its structure is often compared to sebum, the oil your own scalp produces. That is the reason it feels light rather than heavy on the hair.

In practice, people use it for three things: a scalp oil that does not sit greasy, a light seal on dry ends, and a carrier for stronger botanical oils.

Who it suits

Jojoba tends to suit fine or low-density curls, locs and braids that look dull under heavier oils, and anyone whose scalp feels tight after washing. If your hair is coarse, very thick or very dry, you may prefer a richer oil, or jojoba layered over a cream rather than used alone.

How to use it

  1. On the scalp. Part the hair in sections. Apply a few drops directly to the scalp, not the length. Massage with your fingertips for a minute or two.
  2. On damp hair. After conditioning, while hair is still damp, smooth a small amount through the mid-lengths and ends to help hold moisture in.
  3. As a pre-wash treatment. Apply to dry hair, leave for twenty to thirty minutes, then shampoo as usual.
  4. As a carrier. Mix a little with a stronger botanical oil before it goes near your scalp.

Start with less than you think you need. Oils are easy to add and hard to remove. Always follow the instructions on the label of the specific bottle you buy, as strengths and recommended uses differ between products. Patch test on your inner arm first if your scalp is sensitive.
