Hair, Water & History: A community celebration at Bramley Baths

Another community event, another opportunity to lend our support. This time, CC Hair And Beauty sponsored the goodie bags for Wash Day: Hair, Water & History at Bramley Baths, donating products from the As I Am range.

Held on Saturday 3 October 2026 as part of Black History Month, the Leeds event brought people together for a workshop, shared stories, a mini Black History exhibition and a community swim.

An afternoon of conversation and learning

The event explored Black people’s relationships with water and the history and barriers that have shaped those experiences.

In their reflections afterwards, organisers thanked attendees for sharing stories and helping make space for these conversations. The programme offered several ways to take part, from joining the workshop led by Hair by Rhonda to visiting the mini Black History exhibition in the Steam Room.

These activities accompanied the swim, bringing discussion, learning and community participation together in one setting.

The community came together in the pool

The community swim took place from 5pm to 6pm, with everyone welcome to attend alone, with friends or with children.

Photographs from the day captured participants sharing the pool, swimming with floats and splashing together. The session formed part of an event that celebrated Bramley Baths as a place for the whole community.

Afterwards, organisers expressed their hope that attendees had left feeling a little more at home in the water. They encouraged visitors to keep coming back and bring someone along, extending the invitation beyond the day itself.

Support that helped bring the event together

The National Lottery Heritage Fund helped make the event possible, alongside the work of organisers, volunteers and contributors.

The goodie bag donation came from CC Hair And Beauty, a family-run, multicultural hair and beauty retailer based in Chapeltown, Leeds.

Organisers thanked Hair by Rhonda for leading the workshop, Content by Chanait for producing content, Alzi Gram for capturing the day, and the volunteers who supported the event.

Wash Day: Hair, Water & History marked Black History Month through conversation, shared experiences and time together in the water. At its heart was the organisers’ message that Bramley Baths belonged to the whole community, with an invitation to return long after the event had finished.
