How to Lay Your Edges: A Step by Step Guide

Laid edges finish off braids, ponytails, buns and wigs. It takes a few minutes once you know the steps. Here is what you need and how to do it.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Start clean. Wipe your hairline with a damp cloth so there is no old product, oil or make-up on it.
  2. Separate your edges. Use the tail of a comb or the brush to pull out only the short, fine hairs. Leave the longer hair in the style.
  3. Apply a small amount. Take a little product on your fingertip or brush. A pea-sized amount is usually enough for the whole hairline.
  4. Brush into place. Smooth the hair down and forward, then back along the hairline.
  5. Shape. For swoops, press a finger on the hair and sweep the brush round it in a curve. Work one small section at a time.
  6. Tie down. Wrap a scarf over your edges for 10 to 15 minutes to set them.

Common mistakes

  • Too much product. This is the usual cause of white residue and flakes.
  • Layering on old product. Cleanse your hairline before you re-style.
  • Pulling out too much hair. Thick sections do not lie flat. Keep it to the baby hairs.
  • Skipping the scarf. Tying down helps the style set and last.

At night

Sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf to keep your edges in place. In the morning, a damp brush and a tiny amount of product is often enough to refresh them.

Be gentle

The hairline is fragile. Brush lightly, avoid tight styles every day, and wash product out regularly.
