4C hair has the tightest coil pattern, and the hairs around the hairline are often fine and fragile as well. That is why a light gel can look good for an hour and then lift. This guide covers what to look for and which firm hold products we stock.
What to look for
- A firm or extra hold label. Most brands sell more than one strength. For 4C edges, start with the firmer one.
- Wax or thick pomade. Thicker formulas tend to grip coily hair better than thin gels.
- Something you can wash out. Firm hold used every day builds up. Choose a product you find easy to cleanse away.
Firm hold edge controls we stock
- Ebin New York 24 Hour Edge Tamer comes in Extreme Firm Hold and Extra Mega Hold.
- Red by Kiss Edge Fixer is a 24 Hour Max Hold Wax.
- Edge Booster is a strong hold, water-based pomade in a range of scents.
- Murray's Edgewax Extreme Hold is a 120 ml wax.
These are the hold levels printed on each product. How long a style lasts on your own hair depends on your texture, the weather and how you apply it.
Tips for 4C edges
- Start on clean, slightly damp edges. Old product underneath stops the new layer gripping.
- Use a small amount. You can add more, but too much leaves residue.
- Shape with an edge brush, working in small sections.
- Tie down with a satin scarf for 10 to 15 minutes to set the style.
Look after your hairline
Edges are delicate. Try not to brush them hard or pull them tight every day, and give your hairline regular breaks from firm hold products. If you notice thinning or soreness, ease off and speak to a hairdresser or a trichologist.
